Bridges of San Antonio's River Walk

The original course of the San Antonio River is the part without white marks. The river flowed down from the north, made a U-shaped loop*, and then continued on south. (The direction of the foot prints is opposite that of the flow of the river. The foot prints mark my picture taking stroll along the River Walk.  The red arrow marks the start of the stroll.)

To control flooding, engineers made a new river channel connecting the ends of the U-shape and placed flood gates at the north and south ends of the original loop.

To enhance the commercial value of the Rivercenter Mall and the Convention Center, an extension was added to the River Walk.

*The U lies on its side; the open mouth of the U would have been at the west; on this map the open mouth has been closed by the new river channel which is the portion of the river marked by the white slashes and is adjacend to Soledad Street.
