Northwest Trek and

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium

September 30 and October 1, 1998

While Kate was studying, Mary and Freeman visited Northwest Trek on Wednesday then the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium on Thursday. At Northwest Trek, the herbivores roam freely in a huge, fenced in area. A tram takes visitors on a journey through the animal's home area.

This eagle had been injured and cannot fly.  It has a safe home in its pen.  Since no bars or wire mesh are between the eagle and the camera, zooming in for a close up photograph is easy.

One wall of the polar bears' pool is transparent, so people can observe the bears as they swim. The bears, seen through this observation area, seem to have a slightly greenish hue.

In the aquarium jellyfish swim with mystical sounding music in the background. The back wall of the tank is dark. A narrow beam of light from the top illuminates the delicate creatures as they slowly swim.
