Overnight Trip To Astoria
September 29 and 30, 1998
(Tacoma 2)
Under a sunny sky, Mary and Freeman drove on an overnight trip from
Tacoma, Washington to Astoria, Oregon. We hoped to photograph the Astoria
Tower with blue sky as the background. But by the time we arrived at Astoria,
the sunny sky changed into a low cloudy sky. Fortunately, no rain fell. |

Mount Rainier, here seen from Tacoma, was often visible
as we drove down Interstate Route 5 in Washington. |
| After crossing the Columbia River at Longview, Washington,
we stopped at a pull off a short distance west on Highway 30 in Oregon.
Here is a photo of the Oregon side of the Lewis and Clark Bridge.
Here - my first attempt to combine photos into a panorama-
is a view of the Columbia River from this scenic pull off. |

Much of Highway 30 in Oregon winds through thick forest.
(The darker blue of the sky is from the tint of the windshield.) |

| The Astoria Column is undergoing restoration. The
slanting object is not a ladder; it is an adjustable boom with a
work cage on top. |

The restoration efforts would have made the artist and
architect proud. |
