Gerenuk (Litocranius walleri)

Gerenuk (Litocranius walleri)

The gerenuk lives in East Africa. It browses tree leaves by standing on its hind legs, resting its forelimbs on a branch, stretching its long neck, and plucking the leaves with its long tongue. The gerenuk drinks little if any water since its food supplies the water the gerenuk requires. The The Ultimate Ungulate Page , a website devoted to world's hoofed mammal species, has a page devoted to this attractive hoofed animal. Visit the L. walleri page; you will instantly became a gerenuk scholar.

The gerenuk in this photograph resides in Texas at the San Antonio Zoo.

An Explanation of Scientific Names is a webpage that explains the rationale and usage of this this system of naming.
