This great blue heron was perched on a jetty near Rosario, the mansion built by Robert Moran, on Orcas Island, one of the San Juan Islands, off the coast of the state of Washington. The original photograph was dark due to the brightness of the background. The contrast was improved by PhotoGenetics, a program that automatically improves the appearance of a digital image and allows you to choose which enhancement you like the best.
While I was scrambling on the rocks, I leaned over too far and the floppy disc that held this picture slipped out of my camera bag into the salt water. That disc contained the only photos I took of of this great blue heron, and I feared that I had lost the photos. I rinsed the disc with fresh water, dried the disk, and was able to download several files.
