Bison calf

This photo was taken on 5/20/2000 at Northwest Trek, part of the park system of Tacoma, Washington. The bison calves are orange because their livers do not yet make the enzyme which creates the brown color. Their predators, primarily coyotes, are color blind. So in their eyes the lighter shade makes the calves blend more effectively into the grass background.
