The waters off British Columbia have resident pods of orca whales. Here, off an small island northeast of Vancouver Island, are the condensations of the exhalations of three orca whales. The water and shoreline are in shadow, and tree trunks are dimly visible in the gloom. Having taken a breath, each whale is on its way underwater again to feed. The dorsal fins of two whales are seen. The third whale is already beneath the surface. (photo taken 10/04/1999)
